The Salvation Army and Sacraments

I’m going to stick my head above the parapets here and ask a question that seems to be one on many Salvationists hearts at the moment. What about Baptism and the Eucharist/Lord’s Supper?

One of my main reasons is that I am about to study a course on Salvationist Life and Faith in preparation for officership and I’m pretty certain this subject will turn up during the study. I’m interested in knowing what the view is outside of the context I find myself.

I know where I stand on the subject, but I’d be interested to hear what others think. The issue was revisited under General Rader but I’m not sure many people even realised that it had happened. Certainly, the a sizeable portion of the debate at the moment seems to be whether we simply have chosen to be non-sacramental or whether we’ve moved from our traditional stance into one of being anti-sacramental.

So if you want to add your comments then feel free!

Witnesses for Christ

“We are already being pressed for the sessional name to follow ‘God’s Fellow Workers’ and I therefore find myself with the unexpected privilege of choosing the name for the 2007/2009 session of cadets.

The name I have chosen is: Witnesses for Christ.

This name follows in the fine tradition of ‘Witnesses’ (1933-34), ‘Witnesses of the Faith’ (1966-68) and ‘Witnesses for Jesus’ (1988-90). Its main scriptural basis is of course the words of Jesus in Acts 1:8Open Link in New Window, but there are many other references to ‘witnesses’ in the New Testament that will be of interest. The name will be readily translatable into any language.

May God already now bless those who will be members of the ‘Witnesses for Christ’ sessions around the world.”

So said General John Larsson when he named the Session I hope to be joining in September next year!

I have a date set for the assessment conference (16-18 February 2007) and am looking forward to it, although with a little trepidation.

This does however mean that the Latvian adventure will, almost without any doubt, be over this time next year, which is not an easy thing to admit. God has given us so much over the last 5 years, not least of which is Sian (and of course her little brother or sister), that Latvia will always hold a very special place in our hearts.
